I am wondering - how did your dog learn to swim?
Did he just seem to be a natural and jump in without fear? Or did he follow others, his big friends? Or did he fall in and had to learn right there so not to drown? Did you teach him by swimming with him?
I am not sure how Sidney learned to swim but I have to say that he is a bit clumsy when it comes to water. He loves it! Jumps in before thinking about how he might get out. So we have already had some close encounters. (Too close for my taste).
During his first month with me (April) we went hiking around Buntzen Lake. He went down the embankment and all I heard from the path was desperate splashing. I had to climb down the embankment to see a panicky Sidney trying to "swim" to shore with his front legs above the water surface, panic all written on his forehead. Ultimately I had to get into the lake too to get him out and another friend had to help him up the embankment.
You would think he might have learned at that time - but no! A few months later in Whistler he simply jumped off a deck, thinking he could easily stand in the water. To his surprise it was too deep - and Sidney panicked - again! This time I stayed dry and could guide him to shore.
The third occasion was the scariest one. We were hiking at Hayward Lake. We crossed over a bridge of a little stream that was running fast and in he went. He immediately got carried off and I went after him. He had his front paws wrapped around a rock and just looked at me like - mom - can you get me out of here.... I did and we were all good. But my stomach was tight when I saw that just a few meters further that little creek turned into a waterfall and had he been swapped over the edge, I would now not listen to his snoring at my feet.
So - tell me your story of your dog and water - or even more adventurous your cat and water. And the best story will be picked for my newsletter in August.
