Today I want to talk about retouching images. Is it really needed and do photographers do this?
The answer is yes and yes!
Particularly in pet photography, we sometimes have to be quick and - well - just shoot. So even if we have the best gear and if we do this often, we sometimes have wonky photos. Do we want our clients to ever see them - no! So we do a quick retouch before we even show images to our clients so they can choose. But after they choose images, I personally spend far more time retouching and also creating more artistic versions of the images.
You can see yourself, that sometimes the changes to the images are dramatic. And yes, I did pick a couple of images that were - well - not great. But I wanted to show you that you can get a lot out of your images if you consider retouching with a good software.
As you can see, the original images was not lined up properly, there was something pointing into the image in the bottom left corner, the sky was blown out and the position of the girl was not great.
Straightening the image, cropping and providing a good Black and White Conversion created a beautiful image.
Let's have a look at another couple of images that are both in colour.
The software programs I use are Aperture (a Mac program), Lightroom and Photoshop. I also use some Photoshop plug-ins called Topaz.
I admit that Photoshop is really only for you if you are really serious about learning the program well. It is not easy to navigate around it.
I love the Topaz Plug-Ins. They work with Aperture, Lightroom and Photoshop and they are easy to use.
Let's look at another couple of images to demonstrate the power of Topaz Plug-Ins. The initial image of this puppy is not bad, But I love what came out of it after some work with the Plug-In.
So I hope that this post inspires you to think about retouching your images. In order to make the best out of the images you should be shooting in Raw format if your camera allows you to. If you have a point of shoot camera, the least you should do is look at selecting powerful new crops. You will see that your images will improve in leaps.
Enjoy the photo time with your pets!
Enjoy this summer - go and stand under some trees!
I love standing under a tree, looking up. The perspective is always different and always inspiring. When you read this blog post I will be on vacation and I will take some time to stand under some beautiful trees, looking up.
I hope you will find some time to do the same this summer!
